Don’t Break the Bank, Break the Boredom!
Hi there! I’m your friendly budget-savvy neighbor who also happens to be a supermom (without the cape). As a mother of three wiggly, bouncy, doodle/get-into-everything-they-can-find kids, I can tell you that I’ve become a pro at budgeting, saving and strategizing. But being frugal, doesn’t make my life less fun or my kids less happy. So, let me share with you some creative and cost-saving ways to keep those kiddos of yours entertained without spending a ton. Welcome to my journey of organizing penny-pinching playdates!
Homemade Haven
Is your little one itching to be the next Michelangelo or Picasso? Create your homemade paints! Mix one cup of salt, one cup of flour, one cup of water, and food coloring to make a colorful batch of finger paint. I’ve used this to host plenty of painting parties with minimal costs. Not only will you save money, you’ll also avoid those pesky art store tantrums (trust me, I’ve been there).
Mother Nature’s Playground
A trip to the great outdoors is an excellent way to get the kids off the electronics and breathe in some good old fresh air (while giving you a well-deserved break). See if your town offers free kids’ fishing days or if your state parks have free entrance days. Picnics, hikes, scavenger hunts…conjure your inner child and get involved. Consider the cheap cost of a few sandwiches and fruit as a bargain for the fun they’ll have…and the quiet house afterwards!
Recycle and Remodel
Speaking from experience, kids love the thrill of getting something new to play with. But “new” doesn’t always have to mean fresh from the store. Why not remake what you already have? Transform a large cardboard box into a rocket ship or fort. Dolls or action figures can get a ‘makeover’ with fabric scraps and markers. Bonus: you’re teaching the little ones about recycling and sustainability…and that’s priceless!
Swap the Toys
Organize a neighborhood toy swap! Everyone has toys their kids don’t play with anymore. Instead of buying new ones, why not exchange with what others don’t need? It’s win-win for everyone and such a great ice-breaker too.
There you go, my fellow budget-friendly supermoms and superdads – a few of my secrets to keeping the kids entertained and my bank account happy. Most importantly, remember that the time spent with your child is worth more than any amount of money. Now, sit back, revel in the sound of your children having a blast, and watch your savings grow!
